Rip Off Vets

After reading a thread some time ago re buying flea treatments and wormers online and another on buying optimmune eye drops.

For my own information. I wanted to fine how much the vets charged locally for certain prescribed medications. I was shocked how much vets overcharge for medications.

IMO vets seem to be very greedy.

I have looked at a few items, items that need a prescription and items that don't need a prescription. Also items that are also used by human as well, and they have all been double the price that would be paid from my local chemist or online pet chemist and this is more convenient as well.

Thankfully I rarely need to visit the vet. But now whenever possible I am always going to ask for a prescription every time from the vet and buy myself. I phoned my pet insurance and confirmed I would be able to claim back as long as advised by vet, and for any ongoing conditions they keep it on record and fully reinbust straight away.

PS just wanted to add, it makes me question if they really do have animals best interests at heart and they are taking advantage of vulnerable onwers and there ill pets.

No they take advantage of the insurance companies and it's those who don't have insurance that suffer. If insurance companies turned round and said your costs are too much we aint paying then things may change.
My old vet in Essex upped their consultation fee to £30 and lost a huge amount of business.

I did ask a local vet why they charged more and he said he had to make a living,"gave the example of a corner being more exspensive" than the supermarket.

I was given the RRP of the items from my local chemist, If they can make a good living on providing the items why can't the Vets.

Pets owners should make a noise to stop this.

I do, I shop around. I use my main vet because they have really good on site facilities but I wouldn't go to them to have my dogs Pet Passport done because they charge £100 MORE than another local vet!

But they are not just takeing advantage of the insurance companies, but the owners as well. The owners will still end up paying once the insurance money has run out if uffortunatly they have to ongoing illness or are needing treatment from a specialist ect.

I am so suprised that the insurance companies don't have a price list which is the RRP of the various treatments that are prepared to pay the Vets.

The specialists consultation fee can be around £180. But what choice would be have. Its criminal.

How do you shop around?

Its amazing how different the prices are.

You still have to generally stay will one vet so that they have the clinical history.

My main vet is in Glastonbury, I shop online for wormers/flea tretment (or buy from major dog show when they are there) and just contact the other local vets and ask for their prices.

I think we should start a thread with the names of all the websites that we can buy treatments from and how we have found there service.

What can we do for treatment for an illness? not normal health treatments. Thats why something needs to be done. Its so wrong.
