dogs and doors

we are gradually letting indie have the run of the house, now OH's parents are keeping it tidier. but one worry is the front door. They have already let indie out 3 times... luckily from living upstairs for so long, shes still excited to see them.
Soon that excitement will wear off and if they let her out.. she wont stop at them and will just run off.

How can i teach her not to run out the front door?
I have tried having her on a stretchy leash and getting her to sit there with the door open and praising her for it.
And when we go for walks.. she has to sit and wait til i tell her ok. But when someone comes to the door.. shes out like a shot if she gets the chance.. and doesnt turn back to listen to anything i say. I dont want to jus have to avoid the situation by shutting her away in another room when we answer the door. But i dont want to risk her getting out, as she has a thing about cars and always tries to run infront of them out on walks

We have a child gate set up just for this purpose it only takes a moments not thinking and it could be a tragedy.

A child gate is a very practical way of keeping our canine friends out of certain places. I've got one at the top of my stairs to give the cat his space and me peace of mind.

I use a dog control gate, similar to a child gate only a lot taller and the bars are closer together.

You can get something out of Argos its a playpen but you can use it as a room divider.
