When to start taking new puppy outside to toilet

I am getting a yorkie puppy next week. She will be 8 weeks old and has started paper training with her breeder. Obviously I want to housetrain her so she toilets outside in the garden, but do I need to wait until she has had her vaccinations before taking her out to the garden? I know puppies shouldn't go 'out' unless carried until vaccinated and so wondered if same applied to garden for purposes of toilet training.
Also any advice on best way to housetrain a yorkie would be greatfully received. Thanks

You need to avoid any areas that may have had unvaccinated dogs in them, so your own garden should be fine

You just need to take her out lots and lots to start with, probably every hour at least. Use a command like 'toilet' and praise her lots when she goes in the right place and ignore when she has accidents.

Paper training just teaches them to toilet inside on paper - not what you want!

As soon as you get her you need to take her outside in the garden at regular intervals and after playing/eating/sleeping. Try not to carry her although I imagine that's easier said than done with a Yorkie! She needs to learn the way out so she can ask in the right place.

When she does perform, use a word or phrase and praise her so that eventually she will do it on command. It is exhausting at the beginning (my pup is 14 weeks old so I've just been through it) but will become easier in time as she learns to ask and hold it until she is let out.

Good luck.

As above, when you get home I would start taking her outside from the getgo. Although prepare for accidents as there will undoubtedly be one or 2! Taker her literally every 30-60 minutes, and let her walk too so she knows where she is going, after eating, sleeping, drinking and playing.

I started my boy off on paper and then moved the paper outside and then over a few weeks took the paper away completely. Its good if you can to introduce a command word. My boy now goes off on "Go Wee" lol.

If its in your own private garden that isnt visited by unvaccinated dogs so the risk of them picking up things like parvo are low then really thats fine, and they can be socialised with fully vacc'd dogs in private areas again where unvaccinated animals havent been.

taking her in your own garden will be fine, just avoid places that are highly populated with other dogs. thats the general rule anyway.

I agree with everybody else about starting as you mean to go on and taking her outside from the beginning.

Take her out after she eats, when she wakes up and if she starts sniffing round. You'll soon pick up the subtle cues for when she is about to do something and that's the time to pick her up and take her outside. And she'll be perfectly safe in your own garden. My friend used to breed shar-pei and her puppies used to go outside from about 5-6 weeks old with no problems at all as far as illnesses go.

Is it OK to have her on a loose leash whilst taking her to the garden or is 8 weeks too young for a collar & leash? Our back garden is completely enclosed and puppy proofed, but the access is either directly from the french windows in the lounge or a couple of yards along the drive from the back door which is open to the pavement (I don't mind letting her straight out of the french windows, but would rather she learnt to ask to go out at the back door)?
Im sorry if these questions seem dumb, but I want to make sure I am starting right. I have had a couple of dogs in the past, but they have been older dogs that I rehomed and they were already house trained and vaccinated.

Hi Fiona, How excited you must feel about getting a new puppy. Check that she has had her first vaccination before you pick her up. She won't be able to go in public areas until 2 weeks after her final jab. Garden should be fine though. When you take her out, actually wait with her so that you can praise her when she has 'been'. Don't ever get cross with her for having a mistake in the house though. When you bring her home it will be a very daunting time for her being taken away from her family and the only environment she has every known. She will need lots of time to settle in. Lots of cuddles and rest so that she feels safe in her new home. I wouldn't put a collar on her for a few days - one step at a time. When you do put a collar on her do it for short periods and distract her ie. play or feed her.
Good luck and I can't wait to hear how you get on and see photos!!

Why insist on the puppy being vaccinated at 8 weeks ? Maternal immunity lasts up to 10 weeks & I would never have a puppy vaccinated before 10 weeks of age. It might also be difficult to find a vet that uses the same vax that the breeders vet uses

Most responsible breeders of toy dogs will not let their puppies go until they are over 10 weeks of age

Sorry to hijack this thread but a relative of ours got a pup a few weeks ago - a 6 wk old Staffie cross!! They said the house they got him from was very rough & the owners had 9 pups which they were getting fed up with Anyway this relative wouldnt let the pup out even in the garden until it had had all its vacs as they said they had loads of Cats visiting the garden. Can pups catch Parvo from visiting cats or were they a bit over protective?
