Dog Car Crates

Well, as usual, I'm over-thinking everything months in advance. Ideally and eventually, I want my dog to be able to travel in a car harness, but thinking about it, when it's a puppy, I don't know how practical that would be if Dave ever had to take the puppy somewhere alone. He can't keep pulling over to stop puppy biting the seatbelt, or anything like that, or if it's sick, etc. So now we're pretty much agreed we'll sacrifice some boot space and have a crate there to start off with, maybe even carry on if the puppy likes it. I guess my worry was if we got hit from behind, would the pup get squashed. But then in a harness you can always be hit from the side I guess.

Anyway, as we're going Crufts this week, we'd like to be 'up' on some ideas on this before we go. Does anyone know of any good car crate sellers, we're having a Standard Schnauzer, so would need to fit a fully grown one, and we have a 5 person Renault Scenic 2005. Anyone have any ideas, or anywhere I can look? We also thought the crate would double up as our camping/visiting friends crate

Thanks in advance for any help!

Found these links http://www.nutrecare.co.uk/special_deta ... od_id=2836 what do you think? Also, which size would be most suitable for a standard? I can measure it against our boot later. This is another one I found http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/26%22-DOG-SMALL-F ... c7ffeab37a I think a folding one would be very useful, do you think most fold? http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dog_ ... ates/95034

you can get crash tested crates, but they would be very expensive. There will be a few companies that make them at Crufts no doubt. For my car I have a tailgate guard from Barjo and a dog guard that's specifically for my model of car. I got both second hand, the dog guard for £40 and the tailgate guard for £100. I should think your car is fairly solid, so a normal crate should suffice, but if you're worried look out for a galvanised one.

As for sizes, look out for one that's suitable for a lab sized dog, and that will be OK for your dog.

thanks guys for those helpful replies and links. looks like i've got a lot to try out for crufts!!! if a standard schnauzer can be up to 20inches at the shoulder, how big should his crate be minimum? its literally just for travelling or very short sleeping in. we'll have a bigger one at home.
thanks all
