Loved the book, hated the film....

What are your nominations?

I'll start with 2

1. Captain Correli's Mandolin
Loved the book (although it took some getting in to) and have read it 4 times now (each time on holiday in Greece! mmm), think Nicholas Cage is a v good actor, neutral on Penelope Cruz. Hated the film which was simplistic, not faithful to the book - indeed omitted over half the book - and its only redeeming factor was the great location.

2. Chocolat
Now it's not the greatest book but enjoyable enough. The film just diluted the theme (can you be a good but ungodly person; can you be a bad but allegedly godly person?) to her v The Mayor (!). The supporting characters weren't right - especially her love interest and the Judi Dench character.

1. Stephen King's Christine
The book was a lot more supernatural, the film was just boring

2. Frederick Forsyth's the fourth protocol
The movie was ok but left too much of the good stuff from the book out

3. Thomas Harris Hannibal
Much much better than the film though silence of the lambs was a brilliant film

4. James Herbert Haunted
The movie just changed the whole plot completely

I could go on
i'm a bit of a bookworm and i think there aren't many book adaptations that are really that good
One that i can think of where the book and film are equal is Stephen King's the green mile.
Also i think Mario Puzo's The Godfather is a better film than book (the book was a bit trashy)

there are too many - but for me one that stands out is The Beach by Alex garland - they totally butchered that.

I read Thomas Harris 'The silence of the Lambs' long before it was a film...the book is much more scary..

Every adaptation /film of Charlott Brontes Jane Eyre,I was madly in love with Mr Rochester from the age of 12 and no actor lived up to my expectations of rugged manhood

Delderfields 'To Serve Them All My Days' (was on TV soon after I read it.)

Alexander Solzhenitsyn 'One Day in the life of Ivan Denisovich' a deeply moving book lost in adaptation
