Shocked at local rescue.

Our local rescue/dog warden...
Apparently it is only keeping found dogs for 7 days then putting them to sleep if not claimed cos they just have so many.

Is this the norm now in the current climate?

It normal for any stray kennels to only keep strays for 7 days, that the law. Many will then keep them themselves and rehome them in time. However with the present climate its fair to say more dogs are needing homes, so inevitably there will be less space for those that may need to be kennelled longer.

It is the norm in most places, but some rescues try and find those dogs a rescue space.
Rochdale Dog Rescue do it in the north. They even pay for boarding until a rescue place can be found.

Are you sure its a rescue, not a council pound?

they arent quite the same thing

but yes, after 7 days, pounds up and down the country, more often north of england and wales, put down hundreds of stray dogs after 7 days if not reclaimed.

its been that way for years.

unless, of course, they are signed over to a rescue, such as rochdale or Hope or many tears

It is a rescue who do rehome, it is also the local dog warden where the police will take any strays and it is a boarding kennels.
Just thought there were more options nowadays for young, healthy dogs ;-(

That whole never put a healthy dog down term is a sham I think our local dog warden wont tale any of the older lurches or greyhounds to our RSPCA as they seem to find some issue.

From that description, it sounds like it is a private boarding kennels, whom have the stray dog kenneling contract for the local council environment health department.
Who then choose to rehome (or just sell to the first customer as per a pet shop) some of the strays and put down others after the statutory 7 days.

The local dog warden is usually a council employee from the environmental health dept, whom then takes the dog he has picked up to the contracted kennels.

These can can be one of three entities:
1) a directly owned council 'pound'...lots of councils up north have these
2) a private boarding kennel
3) a rescue centre

Yours sounds like number 2?
What is the kennel called?

The police dont usually pick up stray dogs, unless they are a danger to the public or traffic.

Their have always been more dogs than homes available, not helped by all the byb's and puppy farms.
Even less now, so options for young dogs arent as many as you think, especially if they have problems.
They probably aren't all young and healthy either.
