Puppies in a Pet Shop

In the classified section of the local paper - a pet shop is selling puppies, various breeds from £95.... is this really legal? should I contact someone to check them out?

It is legal yes, but the petshop has to have a licence to sell dogs and cats.
A shop can't sell all animals, there are duifferent parts of the licence for different species of animals.

Hi Cooper ,they could be just advertising the puppies in the pet shop without actually having them in there. I would guess if the puppies are in the shop and fed and watered and warm they are probably not doing anything wrong technically but I stand corrected if wrong, ethically it is a whole different matter and if I happened to be passing the shop I would tell them I did not consider it a suitable place for puppies and they would be open to picking up infection amongs a list of other things

It is perfectly legal to sell puppies in a petshop, or from a private address if you have the appropriate license, which costs about £70

they still do sell pups carole, they advertise in adtrade on a regular basis both selling pups and looking for pups/kittens to sell.
Councils will sometimes grant petshop licenses to private residents so they can buy in and re-sell pups.
In Scotland you can also apply for a rearers license to buy in and re-sell pups.
the law actually favours this process as the recent case of a certain dealer from Ayrshire (subject of a TV documentary) was granted permission to expand his business

What always worries me is what happens to the pups that are not sold, do they go straight to rescue cutting out the middleman? Lets hope it is not straight to the vet.

The other thing that I don't like is the young age of some of the pups sometimes 5 or 6 weeks and to think they have probably come a journey from Ireland to get to the store, guess they are bought in so young for the convenience of the puppy farmers and it gives more time before they reach their sell by date.

If only, if only, if only we could stop people buying from such places the puppy farm trade would stop within a week, these people are not interested in doing anything that is not making money and doing it quick.

I speak to a man who brought a samoyd pup from one of these pet supermarkets. He says that he brought 'Sam' at 12 weeks old...he was told he could have him a bit cheaper cos he wasn't as cute and cuddly as a small pup anymore and if he wasn't sold soon they would 'get rid of him'
