Hello, I need help training my pup!

Hiya,

Im new here!

I have a new puppy, dont know her breed she has a bit of everything.

But im finding it hard to train her. The re call is becoming the biggest problem and i cannot take her off a lead yet which is very sad coz she would have loads of fun. We have a huge park near to where i live.

If i can post a pic would you please look at it and give me any ideas on what breed she is.

Be great to here your ideas!

Where have you let her off lead?

When I was teaching Bryan recall I started bu calling him to me in the same room and giving him a treat. Then I would go in the next room and call him. Then I would go upstairs and call him. Get a bit further away every time.

Then you can start doing the same thing in your garden.

Once you get a good recall in your garden, you could go to a safe area with someone else and you pup. Stand a few meters apart holding the pup on a lead. Then get the other person to call her. When she gets to the other person, give her a treat.

It took me a while to let Bryan off his lead and he wasn't very reliable until he was about 18 or 19 months old. He's two and a half now and has pretty good recall.

Well we have only been able to let her off the lead when we have a football with us because she is crazy for it and doesnt leave its side, but other than that we havnt.

She gets side tracked easily, we did attend a couple puppy trainin classes but she was too busy playing and looking around. Its the same on walks, she just wants to explore.

I worry alot haha. Plus we were informed the area we live in has the highest dog snatching in uk ...

are you a dog trainer?

Personally I would recommend going back to the dog training as its really to train you how to train your pup, also the 'playing and looking around' is good for her, socialisation and getting used to seeing and meeting all sorts of dogs and people is vital to a pup, otherwise the outside world remains scary and/or thrilling for a lot longer and makes training even harder.

Puppy training classes can be great fun and you can ask the trainers for advice about any training or other problem you might have.

Just my thoughts

Imagine 2 speach bubbles over her head....one says 'Why should I come back to you' one says 'Why not (follow this smell etc)'.....

You have to make the why better than the why not. The footballs a great idea, but if you use it too much she will switch off to it, you have to have a variety of rewards.

I would also do a Nothing in life is free for a while (will make her a bit more responsive).

She is at an age where she will be testing the rules so if you don;t think she will come back don;t call her, follow till you can get hold of her or wait till she has finished with the smell and is ready to come back. Remember - the more you call her and she doesn;t come back she will learn that she can ignore you when she wants.

If you are very worried I would be tempted to train her with a long line.

Good luck
