Flakey skin (puppy)

I have noticed flakey skin on Baku, looks like dandraff (sp?) any ideas? I have vets with him on monday so will ask them then. But in the meantime does anyone have any idea of why he has this and what it could be?

Thanks in advance,
Donna xx

My collie, as a puppy, had kind of scurfy skin, that looked a bit like dandruff, and my vet just advised me to put a small amount of cod liver oil or butter in his food every day which would help with his dry skin - it worked a treat, and he has no dry patches any more.

It is very common in puppies to have flaky skin. It is called walking dandruff. They grow out of it so don't worry.

Thanks so much for your advice and for putting my mind at rest.

I will try the cod liver oil as its good for the joints anyway so it can only help

Bongo gets a bit flaky too, but we've been giving her a sardine each day. I think it's helped her skin, and we know it cheers her up

'Walking dandruff' is caused by the Cheyletiella mite and is rather different to 'normal' scurf/dandruff. Cheyletiella is contagious and can transfer to humans. Your vet will be able to determine whether it is Cheyletiella and, if so, prescribe something to clear it.

A vet will be the only one that can really tell you.

It can transfer to humans? What does it look like on humans?

Same as it does on dogs - little flakes of what appear to be dandruff, but the 'dandruff' is actually mites and, if you watch carefully you can see it moving around. Hence the name 'walking dandruff'

I asked because i have loads of what appear to be flea bites, just a tad smaller and no sign of any fleas? am planning on seeing the doctor about it but that will probably never happen
