FAST FORWARD… Focusing on your Future

Date: Sunday 10 June and Sunday 24 June 2012
Venue: Kempshott Village Hall, Basingstoke, Hampshire RG22 5HN

Cost: £120

We’ll help you develop your core instructing skills in a supportive, positive environment. Our focus is on giving you what you’ll need to teach your clients to successfully train their dogs including people handling skills. The course also contributes to your portfolio for Kennel Club Accredited Instructor Scheme (KCAI) accreditation. Practical work is set between each day to enable you to reinforce and consolidate your learning.

Suitable for those with dog owning and training experience, e.g. Kennel Club Good Citizens Silver+ standard or Agility level 1-3 and, ideally, with some hands on experience of assisting with dog training classes.

Content includes:

• Roles, responsibilities and skills of trainers
• Identifying training needs, of owners and their dogs
• Learning styles/preferences
• Training methods and motivational skills – choosing the right ones for the situation
• Planning training exercises, sessions and courses
• Delivery including set up/layout, Health and Safety and your own self presentation skills
• Problem people and problem dogs – developing handling skills
• Monitoring, assessing, evaluating and further developing your courses
• Continuing your own professional development - the KCAI

Training methods include whole and small group work and practical hands on training with people and dogs. You’re welcome to bring your own dogs along to participate with group exercises too.

Your Trainer, Di Morgan Assoc. CIPD, KCAI CD Adv Ob, has 25 years experience as a professional training consultant delivering developmental and skills training and 35 years as a dog handler and trainer. An obedience competitor and judge, she runs successful Companion Dog training classes and examines for KC Good Citizen Awards at all levels. Di is a member of the Kennel Club, a founder and accredited member of the KCAI, serves on the KCAI Board, is a member of the Assessing and Verification and Module Development Working Party and also mentors and assesses for the Scheme.

aaah! Kempshott Village Hall - location for our Junior Red Cross classes in the 70s. Sadly I will be too hung over on 10th June to attend.

.. and I'm not an instructor (sigh!)

Having attended a most demoralising class today, I wish more instructors held to this ideal

Well this two day course was EXCELLENT, and was a good reminder of things to consider when training.

Coping with difficult participants
Listening Actively
Developing a Learning Climate in your Class
Recognising assertive, non assertive and aggressive behaviour
Transactional Analysis
Techniques to help with difficult situations
Dealing with unhelpful behaviour
Conditioning

We had assignnments to complete between the two sessions and as well as theory, discussion etc in classe we also conducted practical microteaching sessions within class and externally.

If you get a chance to go to a course run by Di, do go, she was an excellent teacher and facilitator.

Always good to be refreshed.
