Another dog tried to attack my poor Jake!

i was walking Jake the other night in the park (he was offlead) and i saw from a bit of a distance a collie x staffy that i often see and know is dog agressive (he is always kept on lead) with his owner and little girl.

so i immediately got Jake on his lead and carried on my way. the way we were walking was along a path in the park that leads to a gate that goes through to a wood bit. there is a grassy bit we cross through and it was here the other dog was. he was at one end of it so i took Jake across to the other side to keep a distance. just after passing them the little girl who was with the dog came running over and was asking questions about Jake and asked to clap him, which she did.

we then just happily carried on around the path and then were out of sight, we had just gone through the gate and i was ready to let Jake go back off the lead when i suddenly heard screaming behind me. i spun around and the dog was hurtling towards us, and grabbed Jakes leg but let go straight away, Jake started whining and ran around me, the dog chased him and grabbed his leg again. it happened so quick and my automatic reaction was to lift Jakes lead and lift him slightly off the ground so i could get my arm underneath him and lift him. i quickly checked he was ok while the dog ran around me barking. luckily he was fine, just covered in saliva, but luckily he wasnt cut, just very wet

the owner then came running up screaming on the dog. she was very nice ad apologised a lot and checked Jake was ok too. she was holding a snapped lead, and told me that for some reason he was just determined to get at Jake and wouldnt stop until his lead snapped!

i cant believe that something like this has happened twice in the 6 weeks he has been out for walks (he is only 16 weeks old!) when i had Sam, things like this very very rarely happened in the 8 years i had him... but luckily my boy is fine and after it he happily carried on the rest of his walk

Oh I'm just dreading a day like this with mine, I've been VERY lucky so far, doing my utmost to avoid dogs like that, coz just like you, I KNOW which ones they are.

I hope your Jake just shrugs it off, and if he were mine, I think I'd quickly get him around some friendly doglets, just so he can forget all about it. I'm sorry this is the 2nd time for him too, it's just not on is it! However, having said that, the poor owner of that other dog probably feels really awful about the whole thing and it really wasn't her fault, so try and put it down to wrong place, wrong time, and yet another bad experience for your little Jake.

My 8 month old was attacked this morning by a funny little staffie/corgi looking thing, and it saw her off good and proper, but the owner did call it back after it chased Zena for a bit barking it's head off trying to nip her, but she's far too quick and smart for a dog like that! I hope it taught her a lesson, but she wasn't doing anything wrong, she was only going after her ball which had almost caught up with the woman up the front with 5 small dogs, this being one of them, and he turned around and chased her off, so a bit of both really. She left her ball though, she's smart enough to know to come straight back to mummy! Lol!

Can you not avoid this area for a while, or go at a different time, although maybe this other woman will be doing that now of course. Try and get some friends with nice dogs who you can walk with, just to get her socialised again with the nicer ones, that's what I would do. I hope this doesn't, ever happen to you again, but once she's slightly older, she'll soon learn which ones to avoid I'm sure they know through the body language!

It is horrible when it happens, luckily he is OK and hasn't let it bother him.

Accidents happen and the woman had the decency to apologise and check wee Jakey wasn't hurt. Oh the joys of having a dog

(((hugs)))

I'm glad he's ok, maybe if you see this woman again you should suggest a gentle leader.

thanks im hoping he does too, last time he did so im hoping he does that again. he really loves meeting new dogs so im hoping that love overrides any fear. the owner of this dog was really good, that last guy just walked right past me following his offlead dog and didnt say a word. that made me so angry that he didnt even have the decency to check jake was ok. i will definately avoid this dog from now on, i always have but i never thought he would snap his lead. he has a wee doggy friend who is usually always at the park at the back of 8 so think i will take a wander down after work and hoepefully they can have a play

aww poor zena, i hope she is ok. its horrible them having bad experiences when they are so young. im expecting jake to get to quite a size so hopefully he will stand up for himself when he is bigger, obviously avoiding a fight though.

thanks if im ever close to her again lol, i will suggest that. he was on an extendable lead so think it snapped quite easy, they are really strong for a powerful dog, and he is well built

oh poor Jake, hope he's ok, sounds similar to what happened to us, when the dog was put on lead to pass us, but he was let off at the other end of the field but still decided to come hurtling back & have a go. My automatic reaction was to pick Tilly up too as she was so small.
Good idea what Helena says though to keep meeting other friendly dogs so he isn't spooked.
Can't believe it's happened twice to you though.

Once is bad enough but twice!-glad little Jake is ok-at least like you say, the owner was apologetic-more than what I got from one owner whose dog had a real go at Hatti-all he could say was 'he likes to play'????????

Get him to socialise with as many dog friendly dogs as you can. My Boomer was attacked twice by GSD between the age of 6 months (when I got him) and a year old, the 1st came running out of the woods we were walking in and pinned him down, I heard someone calling, but noone came to see what was going on even though I was shouting and Boomer was screaming, I managed to get the dog off and it ran back in the woods, I couldn't find any physical injuries, the 2nd time I had just gone in the park and let Boomer off and a GSD ran over and started attacking him, the owner came over quickly and got his dog under control and apologised, again no physical injusies. Boomer then started to snap at GSD's if they came near him, then it was anything black and tan and then anything bigger than him, he'd never go out of his way to attack another dog, but if they came up to him, he'd snap at them. He has mellowed alot in his old age (now 14 years old), but at 1 point the only breed of dog I could guarantee he'd be friendly with if it came in his space was another BC.

thanks, he is lol but i went the park after work and it was raining so the place was deserted so no doggies to meet. hopefully he will meet some today. i cant believe its happened twice in only 6 weeks. there are a lot of dog agressive dogs that go in the park but the vast majority are kept under control and i avoid them. the worst has got to be a big black lab, she is extremely aggressive and always has to get kept on the lead - she actually snapped at my friend once! luckily the lead prevented her from reaching. i have also seen a GSD on a lead with a muzzle on. plus a few more who get kept on leads and go crazy when the see another dog. its a quiet area, and i cant believe the number of them around here, its quite scary

thanks, me too lol. some owners are unreal! thats terrible poor hatti. the first dog to try and attack jake, jumped on him and jake was whining and the dog was going crazy, i had to punch the dog to get him off (jake was about 11 weeks old at the time so was teeny and the dog was completely squashing him!) and the owner just walked by me and didnt say a word!

aww, poor boomer. thats what im scared of for jake. i dont want this kind of thing to make him agressive towards other dogs, i dont want my boy to be scared on walks he loves them! im going to take him elsewhere when he gets bigger, he is too young to walk far just now and i dont drive so he has to stay local apart from at the weekend when my bf drives us to the various big parks around us
