If a bitch has a phantom pregnancy?(threads merged)

Hi Everyone
My Husband & I have a lovely blue roan Cocker Spaniel Bitch called Shine. She is 3 yrs old on 23rd July. On 3rd May She mated a Cocker Spaniel dog they were tied for 15 minutes. She gained weight, her mammary glands got big, she lost appetite etc. We didn't get Shine's pregnancy confirmed because We thought let nature takes it's course. 66th day came no sign so took Shine to Vets had scan, no puppies. We were devastated but concentrated on getting Shine better. Vet put Shine on Galastop. It's now 4th day of Galastop Shine still has big mammary glands.
Also have read that once a Bitch has one phantom pregnancy they will always have them is this the case? as read more positive stories of a bitch having one then being alright. We want Shine to at least have 1 litter.
Thankyou in advance for Your help
Tova

http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/justonelitter.html is only one of a number of excellent articles on that site. Work with the vet to correct the current problem, and them please go ahead and spay her. We have no shortage of puppies.

Hi everyone.
If a bitch has 1 phantom pregnancy does she
1) be alright next time to have puppies?
2) keep having phantom pregnancies so best to have her spayed?

Also have given Shine Galastop which doesn't seem to be getting rid of big mammary glands & stopping Shine carry around puppy doll.

If you want those awful phantoms to stop, the only option is to have her spayed.

hi
if your dog keeps having pseudo pregs,it is kinder to get her spayed, but not untill her hormones are settled..(having puppies will not stop this happening)
does she have milk?(in her teats)if so, restricting her food will help to dry it up

Hi Tupacs2legs
(having puppies will not stop this happening ) do You mean having puppies will not stop phantom pregnancies?
Can a bitch have puppies even though she is having phantom pregnancies?
Will cut down on her food Thanks

Yes having puppies often makes phantoms worse in the future. You have already mated her once, I take it all her breed health tests were done?

Bitches can have puppies whether they have phantoms or not, but you have to weigh up how fair it is on that dog, she sounds like she is suffering a dreadful phantom, is it something you'd like her be going through on a regular basis?

hi
why do you want pups? your bitch should be the priority.in theory you could breed her,but for her sake its not fair to put her through it,if her hormones keep being upset like this, she could be a prime candidate for a pyo!

Hi Borderdawn
I take it all her breed health tests were done? what health tests? the breeder only asked for paper work proof that Shine had been wormed & vaccinated & an eye certificate. All of which We had.
We really want Shine to have 1 lot of puppies then will have her spayed.
