What age should puppies leave mum? Advice Please...

I have a friend buying a yorkshire terrier X Maltese, they are 5week sold born 3rd february, she is due to collect them just gone 8weeks beginning of April.

She was speaking to the lady today & she said that she could take him next week @ 6 weeks if she wanted to because the vet said it was ok, reason being, the bitch & dog (only 2 in the litter) are fully weaned on butchers puppy & mum is no longer interested, the breeder has to almost force mum to spend time with them and mum doesnt like it.

I have told her even still 6weeks is still quite young and she should leave him there (the breeder is happy to leave puppy there but just mentioend what vet said) but I though i would bring it to you guys

They are kept in a room by themselves now because mum gets frustared if they latch on

Thanks

dont know, tBH, i think the longer the better to get the right socialisation, however if mum really isnt interested then not sure.
But they will still benefit from socialising with the litter brothers and sisters and thats very very important so I would be inclined to leave them where they are til 8 weeks.

I know plenty people who get pups at 6 weeks though, but think it makes it harder with nipping etc...

Yes that is a difficult one, usually I would say no earlier than 8 weeks as they learn an awful lot of manners from their mum and littermates but if mum isn't interested then I suppose thats not the case? Unless the breeder wants rid of them and is telling you that so you will collect early????

We didn't get our first until 12 weeks for practical reasons (we had to be away for a week so the breeder held onto her a bit longer).

When we got our second it would normally have been 8 weeks but again, for practical reasons, the breeder said we could have him at 7 weeks as he was our second pup.

He was absolutely fine at this age. He was housetrained in 24 hours (I kid you not). Happy as larry and settled in just fine.

I guess it depends upon the pup and the home it's going to.

Okay...I have had Guide Dog pups come to me at around 6 to 6 and a half weeks with no problems.
I would prefer dogs to come to me ideally at 7 weeks.
It allows me the time to socialise them with the things I need to socialise them with...
BUT
I have a multi dog household and the pups learn to mix with other dogs and learn canine behaviour and manners from my little 'pack'.
If the dog is a solo dog I would be inclined to wait until the puppy is a minimum of 7 weeks...preferably 8 weeks.

Toy breeds should really be over 8 weeks & nearer 10 when they leave home, especially if they are going to be an only dog.

Breeds like Border Collies(especially if they are going to work)are better leaving home at 6 weeks so the routine & training can be started early

When we have had litters of pups we let them go to their new homes at 7 weeks .They are Border collies & we only let them go to Obedience working homes .If we were ever to sell them to pet homes I would definately hang onto them until 8 to 9 weeks. Although the bitch might not be feeding them etc she is spending time teaching them manners .

Mine leave at 8 weeks and not a day before. I prefer them to leave before 10 or I find mums had enough and they find it hard to settle.
