Very proud moment

Real blizzard here today and enjoyed a great walk in heavy snow this afternoon. On the way back called in at the local farm (where Ilo does elementary herding lessons under close supervision) and no sign of anyone...to cut a long story short they were all looking for newly born lambs caught out in the blizzard. One ewes was missing, she was due twins and the mum had last been seen this morning.

We were dressed up to the nines but couldn't see a thing in the driving snow. It was a complete white-out, with drifts in the field over a foot deep, enough to kill a new-born very rapidly. I sent Ilo off into the blizzard and twice she came back, with no result. The third time I sent her away I heard her barking after about 5 mins. Then, out of the driving snow came Ilo gently nudging a lamb towards us. Unbelievable, what a gentle dog. The mother was stuck in a ditch, (the other lamb unfortunately didn't make it, as sadly it had followed mum into the water) and it took 3 of us to pull her free in full coat.

Ilo has been given a whole leg of lamb (last year's!) as a reward (of course she won't get all of it LOL), and is the talk of local farmers. She is now watching Lobo. What an amazing girlie I have.

Thank you.
It was such a sweet story, I just wanted to share. I'm actually quite moved about it, as I have never taught her Search and Rescue (although many of her relatives in Finland do so regularly), and she has only done herding under very very watchful (human) eyes as she is a novice.

Mary - What a wonderful story, she's obviously a 'special' dog, I hope you will be able to write more about her in the future.
