Super glue

Ok, on Saturday(we think, as we only noticed it sat evening) Ziggy cut himself on some barbed wire, quite a nasty cut about 1” to 2” long but not too deep, its on his chest between his front legs. On Monday we took him to the vet and the vet stapled it up, now this is the second time I have had a dog with staples and they never hold, within 24 hours they were all pulled out.
I have heard that super glue can be used to hold it together, so has any one tried this? and how well did it do? And has anyone ever glued themselves to their dog?

Sorry to hear Ziggy has cut himself on barbed wire, that must have been awful poor thing

I certainly wouldn't try putting Superglue on it though I'd be making another appointment at the vets today and get more stitches put in instead.

I wouldn't glue it shut - now that it's come open again, plenty of germs have had the chance to enter the wound, and if you glue it shut then those germs will fester and cause an abcess, or worse, blood poisoning.
Get a vet to give it a real good clean out and tell them that the staples never stay. They'll have a proper skin glue they can use instead if they think it's suitable. One reason they may have done staples instead of glue though is because apparently the glue can be quite itchy, and the last thing you want is a dog scratching at a fresh wound and ripping it open worse.

Sorry to hear your poor dog has cut himself badly on barbed wire, there's nothing worse is there. I remember from my horsey days, those barbed wire cuts can be so jagged it's very hard to match them back together, and I remember one vet cut all the ragged bits off once and said it would heal much better that way and I was to leave it open but regularly cleaned.

I know they use this glue in hospitals for various cuts, but then they've flushed them out thoroughly first and applied the necessary antisceptics before gluing it back, and they're probably nice, clean, straight cuts, unlike your barbed wire cut.

The staples once held together a massive chest cut on my horse when he jumped it once and flipped over and landed on a sharp flint, ripping himself open on the chest and sides, and the vet used hundreds of stables, but they worked.

I'd keep it as clean as possible and as dry as possible, or maybe go back to the vet and get some more put in. There's no way I'd risk a diy with the old Superglue on that one! Good luck with him.

Well we have had a really good look at it and it is drying out quite well so I will keep cleaning it with vetadine and see how it goes, he has anti b's to take so hopefully it should heal.
I did think the super glue thing was a bit risky

Hi, there

i hope your dog is healing better now. the best remedy can sometimes be the natural route... ie let the air get to it, clean it and the anti biotics will do the rest. its the same as with us, sometimes these things act differenlty, just keep an eye that no puss or anything comes out or that it pours with blood again.

as for the superglue.... i have heard of it being used on humans before, mainly soldiers that have been injured as it can sometimes with them be the only thing to contain the bits of the injury until a proper medic can get to them, but with that its a temporary measure..... so yeah wouldnt recommend trying that!!!

hope doggy is healing up and all goes well for you xx
