Parvovirus - taking precautions

A puppy in the next street has been diagnosed with Parvo !!!! So sad for the poor puppy, but sooo worrying for all other dog owners in the area. I have a puppy too and it's very worrying. Now I won't take them out !!!

I am terrified !!!! have informed everyone who has a dog in the area. No1 is allowed past my door from now on then with shoes on, or anyone who has a dog in fact. All my babies are up to date with Jabs and so on.

I don't think it is related to any one breed, isn't it just one of those things any dog can get and is highly contagious?

Sorry to hear it is in your area

Not at all breed-specific. Follow rigorous hygiene practices. Prolonged sunshine will kill parvo - but not very likely in the UK now Perhaps drive yours to exercise areas known to be clear?

Yes there are a couple of breeds who appear to be more susceptable to parvo, rotties being one of them.

Also sunshine does not kill it, sorry S/B. In fact its very hardy & difficult to eliminate. I was adviced if you`ve had parvo in the home not to introduce a new dog under a year old for a year.

It can be brought into your home/garden by shoes/clothes/tyres/paws.

But before panicking, find out how the pup was diagnosed, was a a fecal/blood test done? Many many times parvo is blamed then its found out it was something different.

Hi,
We had a bit outbreak of this a year or so ago...5 rotties died from it
I spoke to my vet & she said although it isnt breed specific black & tan dogs are more supsectible to it even if they have been jabbed, that is why she offers 3 lots of injections as a puppy.
Its something to do with them having lower immune systems Ive got a rotty & i was so paranoid about it all,no-one was allowed in with shoes,my paths got bleached & i refused to walk her in my area just incase as it can also live on the ground for ages!!
