What on earth is a ''Troll''

I have read a couple of threats in last last few days that have been locked with the suspicion (sp) of being a 'Troll', can someone please explain to me what that means as, sorry to be a bit thick but I'm afraid I haven't got a clue what this means

Someone who posts with the aim of causing trouble, think that is right it is also a unpleasant gnome like creature that lives under bridges in Scandinavia.

trolls are sad ppl who havent got a real life and if they have its a very unhappy life,which they like to inflict on decent nice ppl. best way to handle a troll is totally ignore them and just carry on with forum life.

Troll is short for 'trolling for a sucker' for those reasons already given.
