Showing a working line GSD, any point??

have a new pup who is WL but has been suggested i should show him. not something i had considered as didn't think a WL GSD would stand a chance in the ring against the show lines. is there any point? are their judges who would put up a WL dog? have been showing my other dogs for quite a few years now and we have breed specialist judges who def know what a sibe should be constructed like and will put up a good correctly built working dog and all rounders who, well, just don't know a correctly constructed dog and will put up an incorrect heavier, short legged dog. showing a shepherd is all new to me and have a few questions and wondered if anyone could help?

First things first, is he KC registered.?

If he is , nothing stopping you, BUT..... If he does not adhere to breed standard, you won't get far.

GSD , are not my thing, but to be honest, have never seen a WL one in the ring.

You hardly ever see a WL in the show ring and the few that I have seen tend not to get placed before a SL

I have a WL GSD who in my opinion is more correct to the breed standard than any SL. But as black sable, straight backed, athletic and has a brain.....she would not be placed!

If you're doing it for fun rather than rosettes, it's a good way to show what a good working line dog looks like to the general public.

Does not seem the original poster has come back to see the replies.

But as to showing in conformation classes, firstly the dog needs to be KC registered, secondly it's probably only crufts that the general public would be there to see what's in the ring and thirdly, it's an expensive hobby to just go round on the off chance their would be any general public interested enough to see the difference and for you to prove a point .

Which is why I said "if your doing it for fun". Not everyone who shows does it for the rosettes. Expensive it may be, but some like to do it just for the fun of it

I understand what you are saying, and I am one of those who do it for fun, but even when you are doing it for fun, you are going to get disheartened if every time you are go to a show and get binned, due to your dog looking as far from what's in the ring...the fun soon goes out of it.

And yes cost will come into it, it's expensive to show dogs, and even if you start out trying to prove a point, it will wear thin after a while.

It would be like taking a working springer or cocker into a show full of show bred dogs....your point would be lost on those around you.

For what it's worth I showed my long haired german shepherd in companion shows and was placed first lots of times so there is fun to be had and if your shepherd is from working lines then give it a go in breed shows a couple of times, you will soon find out what the judges like or just do companion shows for a bit of light fun and to keep the dog socialised. Good Luck. Alongside Border Collies German Shepherds are my favourite breed as I was brought up with Shepherds. Out of interest what are his pedigree lines?
