Westie jaw is an overgrowth of bone in the jaw area, and starts when the dog is a puppy;if you feel the lower jaw the bone feels very heavy and solid, and is very painful. It usually occurs between 3 and 8months and is painful enough to make the puppy reluctant to eat but if controlled with pain relief it seems to self limit when the bone stops growing around 9-10 months. I used to groom a westie who suffered from this complaint, and as long as you are very gentle when you are working around his head and neck,he should hopefully grow out of it.
