Slip Mating

Hi can anyone offer any advice. I have a 5 year old kc reg spaniel, during her last season we had our friends kc reg male spaniel over for the week. They 'mated' quite a few times but no tie, neither of them had any experience. She is in season again now and he's come to stay - they are 'mating' for over only a couple of minutes but again no tie. Both dogs have had all health checks and are good. Does anyone have any advice on this and the chances of pups. Thanks

Hi normally the girl will go to the studs home not the stud come to you, you can get puppies out of split mating but its best to get a tie, will this be her first litter?

Yes this will be her first litter.

The plan was for her to go to the studs house, it just so happens that the owner has gone away for 2 weeks and we had already agreed to look after him and she came into season. Had it been earlier or later, we would have taken her over to his house.

Best person to ask advice from is your vet.

If she has just come into season when the male arrived in the last two weeks I would say she is not ready yet - you need to be careful if they are mating freely, you dont want your little bitch hurt - I will be honest with you - my own feeling is, I would not be asking my 5 year old bitch to have a first litter.........

Has she had a litter before. 5 years old is too late for a first time litter I'm afraid, despite what a vet may say. Sorry for any disappointment, but it really isn't wise to breed from her as a first time litter at this age

isnt she a little old for her first litter? I missed the timing on my girl, but once she hit 5years I got her spayed to prevent her getting pregnant at that age for the first time.
