NZ Huntaways

Does anyone have any information on this breed please? Hubby has said I can have another puppy (yay!!!) - it's a rescue and a black lab/huntaway X. I've got a 2 year old male rottie and 3 kids (ages 5, 9 and 10) and am looking for any info at all, but particularly exercise requirements.....

Thank You!!!

NZ Huntaways are very lovely, but very very noisy, they were bred to heard using their bark. excellent working dogs! They are not usually kept as pets, being primarily "working dogs", but are becoming popular.

Have a look here for more info

Hope that helps!

Interesting site Gems Especialy how they developed the breed..

"Some breeds were introduced to the working collies and those with stamina and bark were "bred on". Eventually the desired dogs were found and those with the right qualities were bred extensively. Breeds such as Beauceron, Bloodhound (for the bark), German Shepherd, Labrador and Rottweiller are believed to have been introduced. But this is only conjecture. The Huntaway breed is about 100 years old. "

Sounds like they would need alot of excercise, good luck with your pup

see also - http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/newzealandhuntaway.htm

Not a breed for the average owner, or average domestic situation, I suspect

Search the web for Huntaway - you will find a great deal of information

Hi

As mentioned earlier there is the huntaway club but they are not very good at keeping the web page up to date.

You could try Tuck at www.kiwishepherduk.com for further information.

Huntaways are bred for there bark, so be warned they can be loud and boisterous and have to be kept mentally and physically active, and I don't mean just a walk around the park as they are made to run all day!

Good luck!
