Dogsey

Joined up as am looking for a new family companion. We had to have our last working cocker spaniel put down because he became increasingly aggressive, and, despite a lot of hard work (including all those good behavioural habits from the very start) he would not accept his position in our household. Although, three vets seemed to agree that there was probably "something else going on" e.g a brain chemistry problem or another physiological cause. It was all new territory for me, anyway, as I've owned, worked with and trained dogs on and off for several years (without specialising or in any official capacity, just as a very enthusiastic, dedicated and empathic dog lover). Maybe I was just lucky all those years. I found the whole experience extremely distressing, and despite loving him to pieces (he wasn't nasty all the time) for his intelligence, aptitude, sense of fun and great agility ability, I couldn't risk him turning on my young sons (who, of course, idolised him). My confidence has been shattered and I have been on the brink of giving up on dogs altogether, but hope that I can find something to set me back on track. He was only two years old. I'm looking forward to meeting some new doggy friends to restore my faith in the canine world and maybe help me find another gem to share some good experiences with - one that will teach my boys that it's good to have a dog around and that the responsibility of it is a pleasant and rewarding challenge, not a traumatising nightmare!
