A police dog is undergoing veterinary treatment after having a door slammed repeatedly on his head and neck. The incident occurred after the police dog unit was called to a street in Edgware, North London to search for lost property. Zinzan, a German Shepherd, and his handler were pursuing a 28-year-old man who had been hiding in bushes and was trying to evade the officers. Entering a house, the man turned and repeatedly slammed the door on the trapped dog's head.
The whimpering dog was eventually freed by officers who managed to create a gap in the doorway large enough for Zinzan to escape. Zinzan was taken to a vet; the extent of his injuries are unknown.
The man has been arrested on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.
Update: the man has been charged with causing unnecessary suffering under the Animal Welfare Act and was due to appear at Brent Magistrates' Court today.
