Do older dogs smell??

okays this may sound like a stupid qustion but still::

when we go out nick stays int he lounge for 'quiet time' and millie on the stairs, now millie normally smells anyhow for being a springer...(imo)!

walked into the lounge today after being out a whole half hour at the bank and the smell in the lounge was dreadful - it smells like something has died in here"!!

nothing has..... we have cleaned the lounge (houseproud mum) and still stinks...

im about to go give him a bath which he hates but tis soo bad i have to

is there soemthing wrong with him or do older dogs just smell???

Was it like he'd been breaking wind or was it that musky dog smell? Biff smells bad. I think older dogs can give off a more musky older and of course they find it difficult to groom themselves. It's always worse when he's been shut in a room....

My thoughts are he should be checked by a vet, it could be anything from anal glands to a skin infection or all stops inbetween.

Old dogs can smell, but just a general doggy smell - I would never have described it as a 'something's died' smell - that to me sounds more like infection or something else not quite right.

I agree that if its as bad as that, it is worth getting him checked over by the vet.

I`d first check that it`s definitely the dog - carpets can get very whiffy with dogs in the house (and kids come to that). I`ve got a 10 y.o. and a 14 y.o. and neither is smelly. (dogs not kids)

With him being an old dog he's not become slightly incontinent has he and you've not noticed? That could make him and the room a bit pongy.
