I live on the border between Hampshire/West Sussex, and can recommend walking over Harting Down (there is a public car park in South Harting) and a nice walk incorporates visiting the Royal Oak Public House at Hooks Way. You can do a circular walk which involves no road work at all. (OS landranger map 120).
