Carpet Cleaner?

Can anyone suggest a good carpet cleaner to get the smell of urine out? On Friday night, we had to shut the dogs out of the kitchen while the oven was being cleaned, and despite having been let out only a few minutes before, one of the dogs has been for a wee and a pooh infront of the kitchen door. We used absorbent crystals which we hoovered up, and OH and I can no longer smell it, but apparently the dogs can as they have adopted this place over the weekend as their new "toilet" Neither of them has gone on the carpet before (Amber's previous toilet training accidents all happened on the lino in the kitchen, so it was easy to disinfect and mop up), so I'm not really sure what will be safe to use on my carpet and completely remove the scent?
OH thinks we should get a carpet washer in, but I wondered if there were any products that were slightly less drastic before we start moving the furniture out!

Makre sure whatever you wash the carpet with doesn't have ammonia in.
Most detergents/cleaning products do!
I always use biological washing powder!

Thanks for the suggestions. I can't remember the name of the crystals we've been using but it's specifically for "pet accidents" and doesn't contain any amonia.

Hadn't thought of bicarb of soda - I'll give that a go instead and see if it works.

I've used biological washing liquid in the past, breaks down the amonia, followed by bi-carb as suggested by Inca.

Yep, wash powder is a good one, but I always spray the area with a small amount of perfume after or sprinkle pepper in the area. Deters them from doing again.
