Training Club (not good)

Went to check out the local Dog training place last night, the guy is a member of Association of professional dog trainers been doin it 20 years and all that.

WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH

When I got there he was talking to a young couple with a 14 week old Lab, it pulled like a train he said he could have it walking to heal in 20 minutes but it would break it's spirit (??) he would speak to them later. So that set the little warning bell jangling. So I watched his lesson not once did he give anyone any real direction just had them all walking up and down, you know left right about turn sit all that jazz. There was a gsd that was nervous of other dogs behind it so the trainer was ready with his glass of water to throw at it if it barked then when he finally finished the class he advised the owners of the lab to buy a spray collar to stop it pulling

I went home sooo mad!!

I am currently doing an Advanced Diploma in Canine Behaviour Management and in order to get where I want to be I need to gain some severe experience so I can become a member of UK register of Canine Behaviorists and yet there are prats like this bloke out there ruining peoples dogs on a daily basis. Grrr it makes me sooo frustrated, I dread to think what he would want to do to poor Monster.

Rant over, I'm off to cuddle my dogs

Unfortunately, far too many trainers like this about and now it seems actively encouraged to be accepted by what is shown on TV these days

is the association the BIPDT? British Institute of Professional Dog Trainers? If so, I doubt your complaint will get you very far but it is worth a try.

That's the one, I get confused between them and the Pet Dog Trainers one. Off to see another place on Sunday afternoon, the head guy is one of the Judges off Dog Borstal I think.

Hope it's better than last night, are the members of the BIPDT all that bad?

I know several very good members of the BIPDT but overall they are let's say "traditional" and veer towards punishment in training from what I can tell.

It's a shame that just anyone can become a trainer and can short change owners and mess up dogs in this way.

Hope you manage to find somewhere else to watch the training soon

I took my rescue to a training class to socialise him , all the trainer did was tell us how clever he was, how good his dogs were and the people he knew. When I mentioned some fairly well known names he hummed and ha-ed, he obviously had no idea who I was talking about --- and we never got to see his marvellously trained dogs!!!!! I only took the dog 3 times, but took my bitch along too the last time and when asked what she could do I showed him. She had 5 years of 'fun' obedience training behind her and loved to show off. People were paying an up-front payment for 10 lessons, which in my opinion was a complete waste of their time and money. I cut my losses and didn't go anymore, but those other people had hoped to have help with training their dogs and didn't get it.

I have been asked on a number of occasions by new puppy/dog owners where they should go for training, needless to say I sent them elsewhere. Kath

NO! They have some excellent trainers, but as the association was set up for security dog etc trainers then many of their members veer towards more 'traditional' methods.

I love my training class. All positive methods.
I went to a few classes to find one that I felt comfortable with.
