Whippet bladder problem

Hi, we have a lovely 18 month old whippet who, over the last 3/4 days has developed a bladder problem.

He spends time out in the garden, more frequently than usual, to urinate, but often stands for a long time as if he is urinating, but nothing materialises. Even if he does urinate something, he will still stand there for a long period after, as if he is not finished.

We have also noticed some specks of blood on the carpet, deposited during the night, but not sure if this is connected.

It looks like he may have been a little sick during the night, a yellow bile type patch on the carpet.

Would be grateful for some advice please

Thanks

Vet - straightaway !

It could be an infection, or bladder crystals, or cystitis, or something else, but whichever it is, not being able to pass water is urgent.

Please call the vet straightaway, better safe than sorry as some conditions preventing bladder emptying can end up fatal and even if not that bad, can be agony to a dog.

If this panics you, so long as you call the vet for advice, even if the vet decides its not urgent and can wait til morning, then my response has done its job.

Please keep us posted

HI, thanks for the advice so quickly. Our whippet (Ed) is passing water, but just continues to try and pass more when hes finished, is this still urgent?

He has also been wetting in the house, which is very unusual.

Hope you can assist a bit further.

Thanks

Steve & Jo

Yes, urgent - do it now please, and stop procrastinating - your dog will suffer more, the more time you waste.

Hope Ed is okay - good luck

Are you calling the emergency vet because he really could do with treating as soon as possible if he has had this for about 4 days - it can lead to more complications if you don't get him treated quickly

Will keep checking back for the vets diagnosis as soon as he`s been seen, and fingers crossed that treatment will help quickly so that Ed will be comfortable and all better asap :smt001
