Your favourite Dog Training Book? - recommendations please.

I live in rural Shropshire and there are no dog training classes near me. I love reading especially ‘dog books’ but books are expensive and it is easy to make a mistake and waste money.

I know you have a wealth of experience on this forum and I thought it would be very helpful to novice dog owners if you the experts could recommend the books that have helped you, author and title please many thanks.

Hi Tirnanog I agree with Christine you should read anything by Ian Dunbar and also John Fisher I am not an 'expert' and doubt very much any of us here would claim to be . I don't really have a favourite book either but would advise anyone to read anything and everthing (you can order books from the library) the good and the bad then choose to use the parts that make sense and seem logical to you.

All dogs are different and the best training methods are those that suit your particular dog and enable it to become happy, unafraid and well behaved.

try the mary ray books and videos - vary in topics, but the HTM ones are really good for spending some time with your dog, and great fun ... wasn't funny when I fell over first time I tried the back weave tho
Hope was like a pro from day one !

depending on the type of book your looking for.

Puppy School by Gwen Bailey explains the basics and helps u past any hurdles.

The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson is a must

Diary of a Dotty Dog Doctor by John Fisher. Not a training manual, but a funny book on behaviour cases.

Dont Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor is a good book on clicker training aswell
