My Jack Russel always scratching/chewing back & tail

I have a Jack Russell mix (Lyric is her name) that scratches and chews on her back and the top of her tail...originally I thought it was due to fleas this past summer..flea pill didn't seem to work very well last summer. She will chew and have places on her back that are almost bald and then it will almost fill in and next thing I know she has chewed hair off again. I just bought a new shampoo today "Sulfa Med " pet shampoo - skin remedy. I hope this works!! I know I need to get her to the vets soon. She needs her yearly vaccines...hopefully soon! Any suggestions if this shampoo doesn't help?

Oh wow ! This forum has helped me already!!! I was Reading a thread similar to Lyrics scratching and biting. Lyric had worms last summer . coincidentally I just went to the co op today and bought dewormed.. Maybe this is the issue.. I have to try to get her to vet this week.. Its very hard with my work schedule.

Sounds as though she may have anal gland problems. Have you seen your vet. They are easy enough to express especially if she is in a bath with warm water. But if you don't fancy doing it yourself then the vet nurse can do it for you.

Hi Sharon I agree with Brenda, first thought is an anal gland problem. It is a simple job to empty them.

Me too ... i agree. My ben suffered from perianal fistulas recently ... a very painful condition ... and this was connected to anal gland issues. Is your dog's anus very sore? Bleeding?

Wormers that you buy over the counter are pretty useless. You need to go to a shop like pet city or pets at home where they keep effective wormers like drontal and panacur in a locked cabinet ...

Chewing her back and tail does sound like fleas. If she has or had tapeworm, it came from fleas and you likely have a flea infestation and the flea medication you used simply did not work. Not all flea medications are effective in all regions. Tapeworm cannot be killed by OTC worm medication, so if this was the case, you never got rid of the worms. My puppy got fleas and tapeworm, the fleas I knocked out with Fipronil, and the tapeworm I knocked out with cayenne pepper capsules twice a day. Multiple worm and flea tests later, never seen another one. He had Giardia, too, which needed a round of panacur, knocked it out in one seven day dosage. Might be an anal gland issue, but I'm thinking fleas.

This was just how Pepsi was when we adopted her. Her description on her paperwork said tri-colour because all her fur was brown from chewing.
We had a shampoo from the vet that we used weekly and she was fine in a very short time.
She was diagnosed as having a flea allergy.

The fact she is chewing along her back sounds like fleas to me .
if its anal glands they rub their bottom along the floor and lick underneath the tail .

You need to use flea treatment on a regular basis , spot ons are best but spoem dogs are allergic to frontline. i use advocate and also spray the soft furnishings, carpets and sofas with Indorex spray to kill of any eggs or fleas in the carpets.

That's true Dibby, but Ben used to bite the top of his tail and the bottom of his spine as well. The main licking was the actual anus, but he certainly tore into the base of his spine and the top of his tail.

Oh gosh.I'll bear that in mind,
None of my dogs did that , Perhaps a visit to the vet is the best thing to do , he can check the glands and prescripe flea and worming treatment at the same time if necessary.
