Ripped dew claw

Zak has managed to damage one of his front dew claws. It is ripped about half way up and about half way through the nail if that makes sense.

I rang the vet who said there wasn't much I could do apart from either trying to pull it off (if it is loose enough) or to just leave it and it will come away by itself.

Has this happened to anyone else's dog? What did you do?

Ouch there was a thread not so long ago, and some had their dogs nails pulled out at the vet Not sure I could either do that myself or witness a vet do it either but I would strap it up to stop it catching while it heals or decides to fall off?

I did ask about strapping it up and the vet said not to do that. Just to spray with salt water to keep infection out.

That is what I did years ago when it happened to my dog in the ME.

Bandaging is an option (melolin, conforming, soffban and vetwrap) but it can often be more trouble than it is worth.

I would use sterile saline solution on it.

Thanks SB. It doesn't seem to be bothering him too much.

Both Bruce and Skye suffer this from time to time.
I just keep it clean by bathing with salt water. They usually come off by themselves or if loose enough you can just pull them off. Im sure he will nibble it off himself

Coles ripped part of his dew claw on Sunday but it was loose enough for me to wiggle it off.

I hope you manage to get your dog's dew claw sorted.
