Missy has a heart murmur :(

Just the lowest grade at the moment, but not good news.

Has anyone elses dog got a heart murmur, and how does it affect things everyday?

Have to admit I am very scared for her...

My old springer had the lowest grade heart murmur. The vet casually asked me if knew she had it. She lived till she was 13 and was an active dog, going beating with me in the season, even though she only had 3 legs from 7 onwards. It certainly didn't stop her.

I don't know a great deal about them, but has the vet said it will get worse?

Star has a grade 2 murmur. It's never caused any problems or got any worse and she is 9 now.

Has a cardiologist graded it?

the vet said that it probably would get worse, but want to take x-rays to gauge the severity. It's a new vet as I have recently moved, do you think they may be just trying to scare me into paying for the x-ray?

However, she also needs to have some dental work carried out at the same time, so the anesthetic will be used for both procedure. I can claim back for the xray on the insurance.

Why would he say that??? I would be asking for a second opinion if I was you.

Bandit had a grade 1 , so does Millie, it never impacted on their lives.

Sounds like a good idea, It doesn't sound a nice vet if they are trying to scare you in to paying out money I hope the new vet has better news for you x

My old dog was born with his heart murmur. Found out on first visit to vets for his jabs. Big shock it was new puppy and being told that. Vet said he would be fine but always keep him to a good lean weight. Was a very fit dog no problems until he reached 11 plus yrs then had to have medication for it. Had to have him PTS this Jan but he would have been 12 yrs the following month, he was a labrador so a large breed. Best of luck.

My 13 yr old weim has a grade 2 heart murmur, discovered nearly 3 yrs ago on a regular vet visit after a slipped disc. Vet said she might need medication in the future if it gets worse but so far so good. It is still grade 2.
