The RSPCA has labelled a dog fighting mobile phone app “irresponsible and inappropriate” and called for Google to withdraw it from their Android mobile service. The app is available for download by children as young as 13 for Ł3.10
The mini-game, 'KG Dog fighting', which caused controversy under its former name, 'Dog Wars', involves the users training "killer dogs" and using them to fight other players' dogs to the death. Kage Games who developed the game, claim it is no more dangerous than the 'Angry Birds' app and does not breach “high maturity” Android guidelines. Apparently, a portion of the proceeds from this game will go towards animal rescue centres.
The RSPCA has voiced concerns that the game could result in animal abuse being seen as acceptable. The game apparently 'instructs' players on conditioning a dog using standard organised dog fighting methods and the RSPCA has invited the game's makers to visit their centres to meet dogs that have been injured and neglected because of dog fighting. The organisation is urging people to contact the games company with their concerns and disappointment at its launch.
The Dogs' Trust has said it is opposed to “any form of organised dog fighting and its promotion. We are appalled to see this despicable and illegal practice being touted in virtual form as entertainment regardless of any age restrictions applied.”
A spokesperson for Android in the UK said that after a review of the app by their Android Market takedown team and Legal team, it was decided there was no “violation of any Android Market policies.”
