Re: Breed Characteristics / Classifying dog breeds

Average life-span may be important to some people?
I know I would not want a breed that has a relatively short life expectancy such as a Great Dane (though I know that all dogs vary and you may get an unhealthy example of a long-lived breed that dies young).

Also perhaps average insurance costs? Some breeds cost a lot to insure (or may be difficult to insure at all).

Also any health issues in the breed.

Another great set there Stephanie.

Only thing I think might be hard to do is health issues - how could we use that in the breed lists? Maybe, breeds with less than 5, less then 10 more than 10 potential health issues? But then some people might get up in arms about their breed being labelled as having a lot :/

Does not the magazine Dogs Today already do this?

Yes-that's what I was thinking of. Though I do disagree with some of their info.
For example-Kerries are classed as low on exercise needs. I have a 9 year old and an almost 10 year old and they are walked between 1 to 1 and a half hours per day, do agility and need a lot of mental exercise too. I certainly wouldn't class them as having low exercise needs!

What criteria do they use?

I want ours to go above and beyond what everyone else might be doing.

Another good set!

Come to think of it, anyone fancy helping me with this?

Step 1 - ascertain good categories/markers (as we're doing in this thread)
Step 2 - find and add the info for each breed
