Your RAW shopping list and costs

I think this question often crops up so thought a dedicated thread we can refer back to might be useful.

Please add your shopping list for a week, along with:
  • Cost
  • Number of dogs being fed
  • Their weight

In conjunction with: Daily RAW menu thread

I have just put in an order that will last at least 3 months, I worked out that it costs £4.17 a week but somethings will last longer than 3 months. That doesnt included his ribs, kidney or fish though.

I've worked out roughly how much it costs for each food portion, although I dont know exactly how many portions I will get of each thing so have worked it out the best I can. Can maybe let you know on friday after I get the delivery anyway...

Beef, 600g a week is £1.10
Heart, 300g a week is 52p
Tripe, 454g a week is 50p
Chicken, 600g a week is 86p
Chicken wings, 200g a week is 25p
Chicken necks, 200g a week is 25p
Ribs, 200g a week is 20p
Liver, 200g a week is 35p
Kidney, 200g a week is 40p
Fish, 400g a week is £1

So that is £5.43 a week and 77.5p a day, which is pretty good I think thats for one dog being fed 500g a day btw. When he was on dry, it cost £1.50 a day for his hypoallergenic food.

But for the three dogs, and two cats, my food bill is around £40 a month (sometimes more or less depending on what I can get cheaper/stock up on or for free)

Only feed one of my dogs on raw at the moment and its costing me a fortune as probably feeding her too much but she is still a bit on the skinny side and buying prize choice beef and tripe chunks from PAH and lots of meat from the supermarket. Probably costs me about £30 a week for one dog. As soon as i have freed up space in my freezer i will try one of the raw meat suppliers and hopefully reduce my costs and be able to put my other dog on it too. She does get the occasional chunk too.

I have one dog, Cain, who is very large and weighs over 45kg. I don’t feed him as much as the 2-3% as he has low energy requirements currently and was putting on a little weight. He gets around 700g per day and is doing well on it, he doesn’t seem hungry. I order from a raw food supplier (thedogfoodcompany.co.uk) in bulk once a month which makes it much cheaper than buying from the supermarket. His current food bill for a month is….

From the dog food company

12lbs chicken mince with bone (33p/lb) = £3.96
2lbs ox hearts (75p/lb) = £1.50
2lb ox liver (48p/lb) = £0.96
2 ½ lbs chicken wings = £0.90
4 large chicken carcasses = £0.70
8lbs lamb and tripe mince (42p/lb) = £3.36
2lbs beef mince (75p/lb) = £1.50
2lbs economy mince (31p/lb) = £0.62
1 ½ lbs pig pluck offal (74p/lb) = £1.11
2 whole rabbits (£2 each) = £4

From the supermarket

1lb pig kidneys = £1
1 ½ lbs white fish fillets = £2
2lbs whole oily fish = £2 (buy whatever is on special, sardines are cheap)

Monthly total = £23.61
Weekly total = £5.90
Daily total = £0.84

When he was on kibble and tins it cost me over £45 a month to feed him – that’s over £1.60 a day! He was plagued by upset tummies and always seemed hungry. By switching to raw I have halved his food bill (although you do need a chest freezer and to buy in bulk really). Now his tummy has settled right down, he always seems full, he’s calmer and more satisfied after chewing his bones, loves the daily variety of his meals and finds mealtimes longer lasting and more stimulating.

I was a bit worried about the amount of salt added to some frozen chicken----I buy it sometimes for Polly ---I cook it and she has it with rice etc.

Do you check that?

I did keep a tally over the course of a few months just to work out what I spent and it averaged around £60 a month, sometimes more depending if I had to buy a case of tripe or something.

I just buy what I can get relatively cheap and dont have a menu or regular order as such but here's what I tend to get:
*Free chicken carcasses from the butcher
*Tinned fish (pilchards, sardines or mackerel)
*Pork ribs (£3.79, Tesco)
*Turkey thighs (around £1.80, depends on the supermarket)
*Lamb shoulder
*Ox/lamb heart, ox liver, chicken liver and ox/lamb kidney
*Pork rind
*Pork hocks
*Beef mince
*Any bones sold cheaply at Morrisons
*Packs of tripe (case of 20 around £13)
*Day old chicks (about a tenner for 250)

My dogs eat around 1.6kg a day as I have one at 15.5kg, one at 27kg and one at 29kg.

I would say it costs me about £20 a week.

This is a copy of the order due this week from the Dog food company

10 lb of lamb and tripe mix

8 lb of Ox Liver

12 lb of Ox heart

30 kgs of Chicken Carcasses

30 kgs of Chicken Wings

30 lb of Lamb breast ribs

20 lb of Chicken Mince

20 lb of Economy Mince

15 kgs of Beef Chunks

30 lb of Bones

It will feed 7 dogs for between 4-6 weeks depending on what else is left in the freezer and costs around £145 including delivery. The only other stuff I buy is tripe chunks which I buy 10 bags at a time for about £35.00 but they last several months. Apart from that kidneys and pilchards etc from Tesco's. It's a hell of a lot cheaper than premium kibble that's for sure.
