Snapped dew claw....again!!!

My greyhound Guinness winced when I touched his leg the other day. When I looked at it his dew claw had snapped. This happened to my grey Holly (RIP) a while back but she was in agony with it and it was bleeding so we took her to the vets and he pulled it off and gave antibiotics. She was fine then.
Guinness's however, is not bleeding but it has snapped just at the end of the quick. He's now not at all bothered by it and you can touch it and he doesn't wince anymore.
It doesn't look infected so should I just leave it and see if it drops off?
Also...has anyone used leg protectors on their dogs and are they any good?
I think he did this when I said "walkies" and all 5 dogs rushed up the stairs at the same time!!
