If you want to use something then I'd say stick to something mild like salt water, you never know if your dog will react to human products or if it will suit a dog's skin (they have a different pH level to use for a start, so not everything will suit them)
However, I'd second the vet suggestion - it could be a bacterial or fungal infection starting and may need antibiotics or antifungal treatment.

Definitely do not use germolene. Occasionaly I use tea tree cream or sudocream after cleaning with hibiscrub on my Saluki as she often gets patches on her legs where she runs into twigs etc. in the woods, but I also know she doesn't have a reaction to these creams so you have to be very careful.

Sudocreme is definitely ok, because our vet nurses said they swear by it I use E45 on sore skin, but never a wound. Sudocreme is only a barrier cream it won't heal though. I have used Savlon lots of times in the past, on lots of dogs, but that's me, I can't say it will be ok for fear of retribution, so read between my lines, take the risk if you want or better still, phone the vet and ask him if Savlon is ok, coz quite honestly, they don't seem to do a wound healing cream as such whenever I've asked them for one! I wonder why that is?

I`ve used germolene & savlon on the dogs with no problems - except that you have to prevent them licking it off which means covering it. Covering it stops air getting to it which slows healing, so it` swings and roundabouts`.
Personally I`d give it a good clean and prevent the dog licking at it rather than put stuff on.

I always use the pink germolene on my lot it has good stickability and they tend to leave it alone.
