Has anyone's dog had an ulcer in the eye?

Hi

My Mother-in-law has taken her 13 year old yorkie to the vets this morning because of a sore eye. Apparently it has been bothering him since the middle of last week but didn't say anything and just kept bathing it to get his eye to open up.

It turns out he has an ulcer and has been given some ointment to put in his eye. She didn't get all the info as she can't hear properly so I'm going to ring later when the vet is available and ask what happends next.

They said to her something about having to refer him on if the ulcer doesn't heal and may have to have his eye removed. But we're not sure where he would be referred to or how long it would take.

The annoying thing is she knew his eye wasn't right and that me or my OH would take her to the vets anytime. We think she didn't mention it as he is her companion and she's scared in case it was something that couldn't be cured.

Has anyone else had experience of an eye ulcer?

Thanks

Yes mine had one last year, I did get him seem to within 24 hours though.
I was also warned that it could be very serious if it didn't heal, luckily within 48 hours after first treatment, you couldn't tell that there had been any problem. I did continue the treatment though

My 5 year old Cavalier had a very bad eye ulcer, but thankfully, after 3 weeks of antibiotic eye ointment, it cleared up, I was also warned she could loose her eyesight, hope treatment works well for your dog.

I had a cat who had numerous ulcers in her eyes during her lifetime, we were always back and forth to the vets, she was the only cat I knew who would sit on my knee and have drops put in without any hassle - but I digress!

I was also warned she could lose her eye, but it never happened. They would test by putting a special strip of paper in the eye which would dye the eye yellow and show up any ulcers, then a course of antibiotics.
It usually cleared up pretty quickly, she was prone to them though because she had "dry eyes" and didnt produce enough tears to keep the eye lubricated, she was almost permanently on artificial tears as a result.

Hopefully it will clear up quickly now he is antibiotics

Hi

He's booked in to see the consultant optometrist tomorrow as an emergency.

There is the danger that his eye could burst as the ulcer has gone quite deep. The normal vet said that it was our choice to see the consultant but she recommended that we do take him so he's going tomorrow. It was possible that when he went back to the normal vets on Thursday to have it checked again, that it had started to heal but as it is very visible, she wanted a specialist to see it. They may want to take a graft from the healthy part of his eye and glue it over the ulcer to stengthen it while it heals.

Fingers crossed for Tiny tomorrow please?

Champa had one that burst---he would have lost the eye but our vet is the eye specialist and he did an emergency op after I did a night of giving him drops every two hours. Antibiotic mixed with his own serum from his blood.

Eye has a little vision but will never be pretty again!

Tiny is having his op now! Thankfully he is insured as it will cost £1800 but as he is my mother-in-law's companian, he is worth it!

The consultant said that Tiny has a good strong heartbeat so there should be no problems with the anaesthetic, even though he is 13, which was one of my m-i-l's worries.

The consultant is taking a piece of the top covering of his eye and moving it over the ulcer to seal and strengthen it while it heals. Makes me cringe to think of it!

The hospital will ring her when the op is over, at about 5pm, and Tiny has come round and I'll go and pick her up tomorrow afternoon to go and collect him.

Best of luck with him. That is VERY expensive, it cost 500 to save Champa's eye and i thought that was a lot!

Keep us posted.
