How much do you spend on food?

Hi Everyone

I am fairly new to this forum but I am looking forward to learning as much as I can.
I am quite new to dog ownership and i have recently being doing quite a bit of research around dog nutrtion. I have been weighing up the pros and cans of a all natural raw diet. I have been recently budgeting what i can afford to buy each month and I was wondering what people usually spend?
i know this varies depending on budgets but a rough idea would be great.

Regards
Harry

Hi,

We buy James Wellbeloved.

This month at P@H it was 2 bags for £12 on 2KG bag which lasts us a little over 4 weeks, then we buy wet food to go with it, which was 10 for £5, we brought 2 boxes. So this month it was pretty much £30.

I have three dogs. Skinners is the base of their diet and I pay roughly £17 for a 15kg sack. That lasts them just over 2 weeks. I also supplement that with Naturediet and spend roughly £4 a week on that.

So, I spend around £50 a month on food. Not bad for three dogs on decent quality commercial foods in my opinion.

As for raw diets, it can be as cheap or expensive as you like depending on where you source your meats from. If you are lucky enough to have nice butchers and are able bulk buy from a raw food wholesaler, you can generally feed raw very cheaply. On the other hand, if you are limited to supermarkets and/or purchasing pre-packaged raw, it can get expensive.

My costs vary a great deal depending on source and what I am doing.

I get lots of free food eg lamped rabbits, roadkill, either run over or run over and despatched by licensed chap (venison), and some game from a local shoot if there is surplus depending on various factors.

I belong to a coop where we buy huge amounts of food in bulk and divvy it out so it is peanuts.

I get short dated items at end of day in supermarkets.

I also buy Orijen as emergency rations and training aid at £70/13kgs.

So it depends.

I feed a raw diet and have 3 dogs. I order from a supplier on a monthly basis and this costs me about £40, then I buy the odd bits and bobs from the supermarket when they are going cheap so add maybe £10 a month for that.

I feed 5 medium sized dogs. 2 SBT and 3 Lakeland terriers

30lbs of raw meat costs between £30 to £35 per month depending on what I get. That includes a huge sack of bones as well as the meat

1 15 kg sack of Arden Grange which is only used occasionally from Bately's £25 lasts at least 2 months maybe more

I don't tend to stick to the same brand of kibble. I'll spend anything between £15-£35 on a 12/15kg bag. That lasts about four to six weeks for my German shepherd cross.
Tinned food, which he has a few times a week, is always Butcher's - about £5 or £10 worth a month. I usually get it when it's on offer.
Plus a few quid a week for raw bones - chicken wings, lamb ribs etc.

I feed home-cooked mainly which consists of whatever fish or meat is reduced in the supermarket plus wholemeal pasta plus egg and various veggies plus natural yogurt. I also make my own dog biscuits.

As a standby I feed "Barking Heads" senior which is about £40 for 12kg, I buy the senior version now my dogs are 10 and 9.

It costs me about £10 a week for 2 medium-sized dogs.

Kestral (13kg dog) gets fed on Fish for Dogs or fishmongers normally as a dry food as it's 60% meat and grain free.

It costs around £3 per kg and a 10kg bag lasts around 3 months so I spend about £2.50 per week.

I have started to add in some raw, although have yet to do it properly so she just gets the odd frozen bone as a meal 3 nights a week instead of kibble.
8-10 Chicken drumsticks or around 12-15 wings cost £1.80 so pretty cheap!

I also sometimes feed a meal of wet food from a kong. Something like nature diet costs 89p per pack and fills around 4 kongs.
