To answer the original question, Copper is a Labrador/Greyhound mix and he does beautifully off lead. The only places he wears a lead is where he is required, i.e. the vet, pet shop, etc. Being a Greyhound mix one would think he couldn't go off lead but he has great recall and stays within the boundaries of the yard. When walking, we go on a road that has almost no traffic and we do carry the leash with us if needed.

That said, I truly believe it depends on the dog and the breed if they can be off lead. Copper is 10 years old so he has had extensive training in his background.

No dog should ever be off lead on a road. You never know what may happen.

I completely agree.A cat, a squirrel, or a friend on the other side of the road.........you just don't know.

Then drive to the woods and let the dog run, then drive the dog home. Dogs don't want to run around on streets anyway

My dogs are almost always off lead. We live in the middle of a 15,000 acre country Estate with neighbouring Estates stretching for miles with only two roads (both single track) running through. My dogs are on lead if we go to a town or when walking through other people's livestock - but otherwise they are free to run. All my dogs have excellent recall and training begins the moment they come home - whatever their age.

I now take trixie off lead where possible, however where I live it is not very good for off lead dog walking due to the amount of dog on lead zones is incredibly unreal although there is no roads close by where they could get hurt or cause an accident.

If there is no one else around and I know its safe I will let her off for a good 10 - 15 minute run around, the minute I shout her back she comes straight back and goes back on her lead no problems at all.

Depends. Layton's normally pretty good with recall but he'll take the mickey if I've got the kids with me so I keep him on lead then, or certain times of the year as he gets quite bad hay fever but hasn't quite realised that shoving his head in the long grass sets it right off.

Other dog's a very very newly acquired retired greyhound who still has a chase drive through the roof - I'm not sure she'll ever go off lead apart from in enclosed areas to be honest.
