Spaying during phantom pregnancy - does it prolong the symptoms?

well, we had indie booked in to be speyed on wednesday, and ive been worrying about it ever since. Anyway i rang the vet today cos i forgot to mention she was having a phantom pregnancy. Anyway, she couldnt get hold of the main vet but she spoke to another vet who said that its best not to spey while shes going through it as some dogs can get stuck in it.

Does anyone know if this is true and wot other risks there are?

the appointment has been cancelled at this time, altho she will phone back later if the other vet says somethin different

Hi Jenny it is generally thought best not to spay a bitch during a PP for hormone reasons, I thought you vet advised speying four months from the start of a season anyway..this is very late for a PP ?

Hi Jenny that would make it four months after the start of the season, I think the opinion of most is that midway between the six month cycle is the best time (ie three months) but not before three months from the start of the season because of the hormone levels...that is the main thing ...also not just before a season ...so four months should also be ok and vets do vary in their opinions

Yes, spaying during a false pregnancy usually will prolong the symptoms due, as Mini said, to the hormonal disruption.

Didn't the vet cancel the operation when they told you she was having a phantom pregnancy?

My Molly has just done exactly the same! Had her booked in for spaying (due to hormonal mammary lumps during season) and she started a false pregnancy 3 1/2 months after season. How long do they work up to a season? Is it OK to be spayed 2 months before season, or should I wait until next one and hope she does not have another false pregnancy?

Hi Jen

I thought you weren't getting Indie spayed? but getting Phoenix spayed instead?

Or am I confused?

Hello catsinc welcome to Dogweb..maybe you would like to tell us a little bit about yourself and your dog in the introductions section

In answer to your post...
how old is your bitch ,
what breed is she,
when was her last season,
when was your bitch spayed,
If she is having a false pregnancy now if so ....
...remove all her toys and anything she can guard,
...do not sympathise with her but ignore the unwanted behaviour,
... keep her busy and distracting with walks and play.
Even when spayed it takes a while for the residual hormone levels following a season to fall, the same with a false pregnancy.
