Liverpool women to be sentenced after their dog savaged pensioner to death

Two women are due to be sentenced after their dog savaged a pensioner to death in Liverpool.

Retired hospital porter Clifford Clarke, 79, was attacked in his garden after he opened his back door as he cooked a meal.

The Presa Canario dog had earlier escaped from the garden of his next door neighbour.
Tests showed that the dog, known as Charlie, had not been fed or watered adequately for several hours before the attack last May.

RIP Clifford Clarke - an innocent victim who only wanted to cook himself a meal, and once again a dog paid the price for having belonged to owners who had no idea how to look after him.

I hope they are banned from keeping dogs for life.

Some people should not be allowed to own dogs - clearly these two fall into that category. Though I am curious as to what they mean by the dog not being fed or watered adequately for 'several hours' - how many ours are they actually referring to..

I would guess they are saying the dog was hungry and thirsty so that would depend on the dog I would say. To be willing to attack for food I would say that could be different for individual dogs.

But as to sentences banning them is not enough, they should get custodial sentences of 8-10 years each IMO

I found the comment about not being fed for several hours before the attack a bit odd too, mainly because mine are fed once a day around 2pm. So if they attacked someone on our walk would the fact they hadn't been fed since the day before be used as a reason why the attack took place. Would I be guilty of neglect. I'm not making excuses for these two women far from it, my heart bleeds for that poor man and his family. I just found the report a bit odd tbh.

I think I read somewhere that the dog didn't have food or water for 24h.
I don't think that not getting any food for 24h made this dog attack the man, but it probably had an influence on the behaviour as the dog must have already had issues.
Not getting any water for 24h can affect a dog's behaviour more, but I guess we'll never know.
I think more than anything else it just shows that the two women weren't looking after the dog properly.

Not long enough because 45 hours with out food etc should really carry a custodial sentence and add the death of that poor man as I said before 8-10 years would have bee fairer.

45 hours is days not hours so sometimes the reports are very misleading. What's the point of new laws when they're given 12 months. I think it's ridiculous and the severity of the attack warranted far longer IMO.

Heard it on the news whilst on the bone run. 2 days is a long time for anyone, never mind a dog to be left without anything at all, and they will be back on the streets within a couple of months and able to torture some other dog once more. Disgusting, was hoping they would be made an example of, after all they were responsible for a death, if they had been driving a car, wielding a knife, it would have been years.

oh.. 45h! That's a long time! I would be more than grumpy after not getting food or water that long, never mind a dog with a higher metabolism.
Really they should be tried for manslaugher, not just animal cruelty.
