Constant barking in garden

Hi
How can you train a dog to stop barking?
Whenever he is in the garden he mostly runs to the edging and barks for no reason. The dog is an Alsation so it needs to be corrected as soon as possible.
Regards Ianc

Hello there!

Hope you get some help! It can be very frustrating even if it is not your own dog!

I squirt mine with the garden hose. I started squirting just ahead of him, if he persisted he got a good squirt in the mush which he didn't like, so he got the message pretty quickly. These days if he runs out to bark I only have to pick up the hose and he looks at it and thinks better of it.

Are you saying if he wasn't a GSD it wouldn't be a problem ?

Any dog that barks all the time when in the garden needs to be trained not to, not just GSDs.

Are you sure he is barking at nothing ? Do you have neighbours who have cats, dogs, children etc that could be sparking him off ???

i also have a dog that barks in the garden non-stop, at our cats mainly and was hoping to steal some advice from this thread but was just wondering about the water thing. I've heard loads of people say this is the best way but i'm trying to get him to like water and i dont want him to associate it with a punishment. Sorry for jumping in on ur thread with no help for u!

My 2 like being squirted with the hose

When they bark at the fence gates, they are given a "Sshhh" or a "Quiet". If they don't stop, they are immediately brought inside and the door is shut. Curtailment of priviledges!!

They are then let back out again, but very rarely bark a second time.

That's exactly how we deal with ours except our control word is "Enough"

That's how I would deal with Takara but I can never blinkin catch her when she decides she's barking at someone.

She'll either run up onto the grassed bit which I can't manoevre very easily due to a dodgy ankle or around and around the car.

She's getting better but I am going to start using a long line on her so that when she barks, I can reel her back in!

To be fair - she would probably be great if it wasn't for the idiots around here who wind her up by making woofing noises at her and waving sticks around!

Mine like to be sprayed with the hose but not squirted with it. They have been taught to stop on command but if they ignore it they get squirted or shown the hose. Syd is the main offender, he's a guarding breed and takes his role seriously but it gets on my nerves never mind the neighbours, when he feels the need to answer every squeal from the kids next door. He loves water and dives in the lake and the paddling pool when the fancy takes him. He actually looks at me to see if I've got the hose before running outside to tell the kids off.
Also although they know to stop on enough or shhh which is fine if I'm outside close by, it doesn't work if they can't hear me, The hose on the other hand has quite a long reach.
