Poor old Biff, I'm really sorry to hear this. I was hoping he would be better today.

I'm thinking of you Ramble and have my fingers crossed for you all.

So sorry to read all that you must be devistated. But at least you are doing the right thing by not letting him suffer, if and when you do make that decision, you know where all here for you

so sad ((((((((((hugs))))))))

Cosmo will not leave Biff alone at the moment, we are having to separate them. Our other vet told us, the last time he was like this (which was when Biff was really ill at Christmas) that other dogs often know when there is something really wrong...perhaps it is Cosmo we need to listen to?
Oh God that's just made me burst into tears! Maybe Cosmo will tell you. You know, either way I know you'll know when it's the right time.

I think you should look at this as a daily thing for now and judge each day as it happens. The fortnightly thing is something to aim for but little steps might be best.

The irony is he is better in that he isn't choking and gasping every few minutes...but he's worse in that he is doing that after he barks now. The vet said this is progressive and so he won't improve he will carry on getting worse (if it is indeed LP and not an infection, or his heart by the sound of the meds he's put him on).
Bless him , he's happy enough though and wolfed down his tea earlier.

Sorry Pidgey I didn't mean to make you cry.

I think you are right..a day at a time is our best option, especially if the weather stays hot...

Sounds like Biff is on the last part of his journey, I know how heart broken you are A. However the next two weeks go and whatever your decision, you know that you are not alone.

A normal Vet should not operate on LP its a speacialist thing, it cant be operated on untill its very bad, like cataracts. Its worth knowing though, that LP can be TOTALLY cured and the dog lead a normal life afterwards, it almost always affects old dogs and they feel so much better when they can breathe. Symptoms, are a cough, a lot of the time when lying down, a voice change, usually goes squeaky. Exercise intolerance and will be worse in the heat. The vocal chords gradually suffercate the dog, tie back surgery is done and the dog will be able to breathe properly again.

The vet doesn't think he is a possible for the surgery because of everything else that is wrong with him, the trouble is Dawn, he probably isn't strong enough to undergo a GA. He thinks surgery is not an option. I trust him ,he is a great vet from a large, well respected practice. He ahd some dealings with MO towards the end and I know he likes to do everything by the book and give every dog as much of a chance as possible...he doesn't think Biff has much chance, it is the whole picture I think rather than just the LP. I am going to have a chat to my vet friend later, but I suspect he will say the same.
I know most dogs do recover well from LP surgery but I think it's 25% that die within 3 months of pneumonia...that's quite high odds when he is already so weak and has so many other problems. If this was his only health issue I wouldn't have a problem in going for surgery and this vet...who LOVES all things surgical and all investigations known to man (or vet)also wouldn't have a problem...but it isn't Biff's only health issue and at the end of the day it is that balance thing again...putting a sick, old dog through a GA and surgery.
I am also not prepared to risk sending my dog to the vet and losing him when he's there again. Not an option. Can't do that again Dawn.
