crufts terrier handler

this isnt meant to be a debate but cud turn into one?

i didnt get to go to crufts unfortunetely but i watched it on tv sunday night and was shocked to see the handler of the winning terrier lift his dog off the stand by its tail and collar!
is this an acceptable method of dog handling? i realise the dog was small, but surely pickin it up by tail and collar must hurt?

I thought I saw that too but was not sure if thats what he did Im glad it was not just me that saw it.

i saw him do it but then so did all the others who put their dogs on the table in the smaller breeds i dont like it but it seemed quite common place

Yes Jenny, it is he done thing with pro handlers and the smaller dogs, I hate to see it too

i think if it hurt ,the dogs would let them know. you try pullin a dogs tail till it hurts and see what reaction you get ,if you dont have any fingers left at the end of it it'll serve you right for pullin a dogs tail lol.

I hated seeing the handler lift the dog like that

It is not painfull for smaller breeds, but it still doesn't look right, it seems a bit disrespectfull.

Did any see the chihuahua handler bending the dogs tail over?

i think i must have cringed thru the whole thing,lol. the holding the dogs head up high by lifting up the collar til it looks like its strangelling the dog, the bending the tails over, repositioning the feet every 5 seconds, pickin the dog up by its tail. one thing that did make me laugh is that as the owners are running the dogs round the hall the owner is out of breath and the dog looks at em like 'oh we're running are we?'.lol.

I don't like seeing it either, but as Mini said it seems to be the done thing in many terriers - I've seen alot of Irish owners do it and they're big terriers . I admit though that a terriers tail is generally so much stronger than other dogs as the tail was used to pull them out of the hole when they were ratting - but I'm still not keen on seeing it nowadays.
