Sure I remember Lonnie Donegan doing a rendition of the New Orleans one it being a hit in the 1960's around the time of his hit with "Cumberland Gap".

How could anyone forget the "Chewing Gum" song - it is imprinted on my aged brain for it's sheer grimness! LOL!

Lonnie Donegan - What a great guy, he preceded and was influential for so many who followed but he was really the first. Never got the recognition or fame he deserved and was still touring on stage right up to his death.

You missed out the bit about "On the bed post" I think that was the 'grimness' that LG referred to.

Didn't realize Lonnie was dead. Went to see him live at Combe Lodge in Brentwood. He was brilliant!

Just remembered the "My Old Man's a Dustman" - went to see him at Stockport Town Hall - he was very good.
About a month later at the same venue I saw Acker Bilk and his Jazzmen - just loved Stranger on the Shore - still do!
Bilk was so fed up of playing it he called it Strangler in the Straw.

I only saw him once at Ipswich, fantastic performer.

He was only 71 when he died of a major heart attack in Market Deeping, Lincolnshire, still working still touring, despite having had a series of heart problems.

None of the big names who followed him ever really acknowledged the influence he had on them. Life can be cruel sometimes.
