MPs debate new dog 'licence' to help control dangerous breeds after death of Bolton s

A new scheme to force dog owners to register their animals every year is being debated by MPs. It follows the death of 14 year old Jade Lomas Anderson. Her local Bolton MP Julie Hilling has been calling for tougher action on dangerous dogs since Jade was killed by dogs in 2013.

She's backing calls from Jade's parents and from the coroner at her inquest They all want a licence brought back. The MP wants money raised from the scheme to be used to enforce conditions and penalties on the owners of dangerous dogs.

Responsible dog owners will register their dogs if the scheme becomes law, but unfortunately irresponsible dog owners will quite probably not do so.

They'd need a national data base linked to microchipping to ensure that all dogs are registered at birth to have a hope in Hell of getting a majority of the dog owning public to pay a yearly licence. It's the only way that they'd be able to check whether or not a licence was up to date

And first they would need all dogs to be microchipped... which again responsible dog owners/breeders will do but others will not bother...

It is like the rabies shot here. It is mandatory that all dogs have yearly rabies shots, given by the Local Authority vet who then registers the face with the Ministry of Agriculture under the microchip number. And the microchip number is registered under the ID number of the owner.

That is classed as the equivalent of a yearly dog licence.

And yet there are far too many dogs who have never had a rabies shot let alone be microchipped.

Incidentally, dogs that are microchipped and registered as having had the current rabies shot, can be spayed/neutered by a private vet at a very reduced price as the Ministry of Agriculture reimburses the vet to make up the reduction.
