Man jailed for stabbing police dog with screwdriver during botched burglary

A man has been jailed for stabbing a police dog after putting it in a headlock in a botched burglary.

Mark Finnerty, 47, pleaded guilty to five charges including criminal damage (to the police dog), at Stockport magistrates court today and was sent to prison for four months.

Bomber, a German Shepherd, was stabbed in the paw with a screwdriver during a struggle with Finnerty.

Police were called to Chilli Massalla on Castle Street, Edgeley, Stockport, just before 6am yesterday morning following reports a man was seen trying to get in through the front door.

A dog patrol attended and discovered Finnerty, of Crosby Street, Shaw Heath, who got to his feet and produced a screwdriver.

The police dog was released to detain him but Finnerty wrestled with the dog and put it in a headlock, the ManchesterEvening News reports.
.
The dog handler tried to handcuff Finnerty but Bomber was stabbed in the paw.

Finnerty, who sustained dog bites in the incident, was eventually handcuffed and arrested.

Bomber was taken to a vet and was bandaged and discharged.

Police say Bomber is recovering at home following the incident and is expected to make a full recovery.

GMP Stockport West neighbourhood policing team joked on Twitter that Bomber had left ‘a lasting impression’ on Finnerty.

Finnerty was given two months for possessing an offensive weapon and two months for criminal damage, to be served concurrently.

He was also jailed for two months for attempted burglary to be served consecutively and one month each for handling stolen goods and possessing a class B drug, both to be served concurrently.

I am glad that Bomber was not badly hurt - and although I know I should not say so, I wish he had left more of a lasting impression with his teeth..

"to be served concurrently" what the heck is the point of that!!! Effectively it means that he was found guilty of an offence but has NOT been punished. I really wonder what planet our judges live on!!!!
