A fund set up by a grateful dog owner has raised almost £50,000 for a Lake District mountain rescue team.

Adam Nolan took to social media when his dog, Jasper, went missing during a walk up Scafell Pike on 2 November.

The #FindJasper campaign went viral and the animal was located four days later by Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team.

It prompted Mr Nolan, of Cleator Moor, to organise a JustGiving page for the rescue team and the total raised has now reached £49,273.

Members of the public, a helicopter and mountain rescue volunteers were involved in the search for Jasper who was eventually located on a ledge near the summit of Scafell Pike.

The Wasdale team succeeded in bringing the dog down in the early hours of 6 November.

Mr Nolan said he was "over the moon" at Jasper's safe return, and thanked everyone involved.

Speaking about the fund-raising campaign, Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team said: "It is heart-warming to know that this level of support is out there and we are very humbled with the level of funds that have been donated.

"This comes at a fortuitous time because the team is seeking to build a new base, which could cost up to £500,000 and we anticipate that we will use the funds for this purpose."
