I love what the spokesperson for the British Bulldog Club says!

yeah they are not keen on different colours, but a dog is a dog, does it really matter what the colour of it is. I had some absolutely dreadful comments from GSD people when my friend and I bought a blue GSD girl a few years ago. I was told that she would probably be dead by 18 months by one of them, and she wasn't a 'proper' GSD by another. I love the colour of the bulldog, what I would ask though, is how did they achieve that colour, the way its done is questionable sometimes, and I would be examining the pedigree closely.

im hazarding a pessimistic guess that it was most prob just one of those things OR purposely bred to make extra money (like when backyard dobe breeders advertise blues as 'rare' - yep theres a reason for that!)

as for Ł16,000 - i wonder what the advert looked like?

I have had a blue dobie, and her pedigree wasn't in the least inbred, she was linebred, but plenty of black and tans and browns in there as well, so it doesn't always go to follow, unfortunately she had the 'wobbles' so I never bred from her, because by then I had already had 2 unrelated dobies come down with it, and I just had the feeling it may happen, and it did, so very glad indeed I followed my gut instincts on that one. I have also had the mind blowing experience of having one of my puppies rejected by someone as she was the 'wrong colour' and was expected to 'change' her for the more 'typical wolf grey colour' (their words) so I returned their deposit. These people are STILL looking for the 'typical wolf grey' as a friend of mine had an enquiry from exactly the same person asking if she would return their deposit if the puppy didn't turn out grey. I am extremely relieved to see they are still looking for the 'right colour' as this means that no one (so far) is putting colour before temperament, health and suitability when homing puppies.

Lila is one of a litter of four, specially bred from selected stock to produce gorgeous, lilac-coloured puppies.

Her owner also breeds French bulldogs and Shar Pei pups, as well as British bulldogs like Lila.

Perhaps that is how the colour came about?

TW sorry it wasnt clear I wasnt inferring that Blue was specifically caused by inbreeding in Doobers (if you dont know its in the lines you dont know, i believe you can gene test these days?)

theres a kennel in Birmingham that has lots of tri coloured 'lilac' studs.

Oh right,I know there are people that do breed for colour, and I know father/daughter matings and the like are the quick and easy way if you are in it to make a fast buck, in those days of course, no gene testing, so either you inbred or you hoped to get lucky really, so they were really rare then if you didn't get involved with the inbreeding side of it. Of course with colour comes other dire health problems when inbreeding, so its a pathway I'd rather not go down if at all possible, hence my request for a 16 gen pedigree when I was looking to get her!!! Gene testing is fantastic and we're using it to test for cataract carriers, one of Mabs brothers was the first Utonagan to have the test, and it was a clear, which I was sure it was going to be, but there is still a bit of a worry, also used it for DM in our breed and in the dogs we are bringing in to expand and diversify the existing gene pool as well, and there's other things we are looking at doing. I rather like the various colours you get with our dogs, and would hate them all to be 'typical greys' in fact I look forward to multi coloured litters.

The dogs aren't actually purple they are very light grey :-O

As for "Blue" GSDs they are a colour dilute with yellow eyes that would be unable to work German sheep as they do not flock for dogs with yellow eyes.

Sadly most breeders of non standard colours in recognized breeds never do the testing that should be done & breed simply to make money :'(

The blue gsd I part own is from hip scored and health tested lines, and I wouldn't have bought her otherwise, there was another breeder I contacted regarding a blue female, and she became quite evasive when I asked the question regarding hip scoring, so I do understand what you say. As all my dogs are health tested and I do not breed from non health tested dogs, then I would not be interested in purchasing a dog from untested lines. Interesting about the yellow eyes, and the sheep , but how many GSD's these days work sheep?

I doubt very much the bulldog in question us pure bred, the breeder also breeds french bulldogs....the pup does not look like a typical bulldog regardless of its colour .
